New Businesswoman of the Year Marinka Nooteboom puts the sober and fearless man's world to her will

Ten years ago, the then banker Marinka Nooteboom made the unexpected switch to the family business that also bears her name. A decade later, Nooteboom may call herself Business Woman of the Year 2022. It is the most prestigious honorary title in Dutch business for the top woman who is changing the Dutch “man’s world” of transportation from the inside out.

Guts and perseverance cannot be denied to the 50-year-old managing director of the Royal Nooteboom Group. You just have to have the courage. Taking the helm as a member of the 5th generation, at a time when the global economic tide is against us due to the Financial Crisis. Guileless she was not, because before she took control, she was a member of the board of commissioners.

Yet it was by no means an automatism that Marinka Nooteboom would be given a leading role in the company that designs and builds impressive trailers in Wijchen. Before joining the family business, she made a career in banking. That she switched anyway was because she values the tradition of the company that bears her last name.

In 2021, the Royal Nooteboom Group may call itself the market leader in the production of trailers for exceptional road transport, such as for the transport of wind turbine blades. But that was not easy, Marinka also maneuvered the family business through considerable storms in the past ten years.

The new Business Woman of the Year, as she emphasizes herself, chooses her path. That was simply also part of the lessons she was taught from home. As a former banker at Van Lanschot with the required financial knowledge in her luggage, Marinka Nooteboom stepped into the footsteps of founder Willem Nooteboom.

Her ancestor laid the foundation of the company as early as 1881. Agricultural wagons were built in his blacksmith’s shop under the smoke of Rotterdam. Now they are giant trailers that roll out of the company’s warehouse (5 soccer fields in size) in Wijchen.

Exactly 140 years after its foundation, the Prix Veuve Clicquot, was awarded yesterday to Marinka Nooteboom at the Hallen Complex in Amsterdam.

In the process, a certain disbelief prevailed.  As a student, she always looked up to the strong business women who preceded her. That she would be on stage herself so many years later, she could not have imagined at that time.

It marks her down-to-earthiness and no-nonsense attitude that has shaped her into Nooteboom’s rock over the past decade. A company with equal opportunities for men and women.

The new Business Woman of the Year, therefore dedicated the award last night to the 450 employees of Nooteboom, to her family and loved ones, the members of the Nooteboom family, and in particular to her son Thijn.
